To be "where" He is, one must follow the command to love "as" He loved us (13:34). This and no one else is the way. "Lord, we do not know where You are going, how we may know the way". Thomas is willing to die at the side of Jesus (11:16). He loves him and thinks that the greatest love is to give one's life for one's friend. But he still does not know that love is stronger than death. Not this, but love is the ultimate reality, because it is also the first. The leaving of Jesus is not the end, but the fulfillment of the gift of Himself. Thomas will have difficulty believing that Jesus is Risen, precisely because he ignores that love is the way to life. But to know this he will first have to put his finger in the place of the nails and his hand in the open side. Only then will he see the hidden mystery and be able to say: "my Lord and my God!"
