HERE IS THE MAN Jh 19,1-8

  1. FAUSTI - Those who do not listen to the voice of truth, are among those who suppress the just. The responsibility of every powerful person is their irresponsibility in the face of the innocent.
That is why he is responsible for the evil he inflicts on him.
In Mk the scourging is directly connected to the crucifixion (15:15): it is an anticipation of it, which accelerates the death of the crucifix.
In John instead the part of the crowning of the king. The scourging and slapping are an inclusion to the royal coronation of Jesus: they highlight the refusal of the King who testifies to the truth.
But He is King precisely because He is the Innocent struck by the evil of the world (Is 50:60; 53:4-7).
It is the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world(1,29).
Jesus, crowned with thorns, unmasks the royalty of thieves/brigands and shows the solemn Majesty of the beautiful Shepherd: He is the Son equal to the Father, because He becomes a Servant of His brothers and sisters. At the end of Luke's parallel text, Jesus says "I am among you, as the One who serves" (Lk 22:27).
It is not Pilate who leads Jesus out, it is He who "goes out" as He will take up the Cross.
    The initiative is His.
It is the public apparition of the Messiah, with His regal sign, before the leaders of the people.
In this exit, as in the following one (19:13), there is the rejection of the darkness that does not love the light.
"Behold the man" sounds sarcasm. Your king is disfigured and derided, Man of Sorrows, who knows well how to suffer (Is 53:3), Pilate, wanting to mock the leaders, without knowing how to deride even Caesar, the head of which he is servant. Believing to make fun of the other, he unmasks himself and his peers.
In fact, he says the great truth: here is man, as the power of man over man reduces him.
This is what the King of every man does. - "Behold man. " Jesus is man fully realized. His way of being man reveals who God is and that He is God: One who loves to the extreme. Here is man, here is God; the true man, the true God! His humanity is the definitive manifestation of God, the freedom of a Love that takes on all violence and death.
In Him we have heard, seen, contemplated and touched the Word of Life, the Word become flesh, the Son who has shown that God that no one has ever seen.
This man is, on earth, the heir of the Name, the Son of God, the irradiation of His Glory and imprint of His substance, which sustains everything with the power of His Word: He frees us from evil and sits at the right hand of the Majesty, (Heb 1...). In Him "dwells corporally all the fullness of the Divinity" (Col 2:9).
"They saw Him. In the Passion according to John the people never appear. When we speak of Jews, we mean their leaders, priests and Pharisees during the Life of Jesus, priests and servants during the Passion. The people, as such, are not responsible for the death of Jesus. The leaders, Jews and Romans, are responsible.

  2. -->Jesus is crucified because He is a king crowned with thorns, a poor man equal to all the poor of the earth, oppressed by those who hold power.
In the unanimous cry "Crucified!" everyone can hear his own voice, For we are inhumane. We do not accept the truth of a God who is humility and service; we do not accept the true king, his representative on earth, the poor Christ who pays the bill of the powerful.
The cross, the scaffold of the rebel slave, will be the "raising" of the Lord who manifests Himself as such: servant of Life, slave for Love.
Pilate once again underlines the innocence of Jesus, the man who bears the faults of others
The cross will be His throne, where He will kill the ultimate enemy of man: stupidity and death.
It is the promised Messiah who frees man, the Just One who bears the evil of the world, the Son in solidarity with His brothers and sisters.
The reason for the condemnation of Jesus is that He has proclaimed Himself the Son of God : being a man He makes Himself God.
If He is killed because He is God, because He is killed He reveals Himself as God.
It is a God radically different from what, from Adam until now, man imagines.
The "Crucified God" makes the difference between Christianity and every religion.
Difference of fundamental importance, which is His Glory and our salvation. A Crucified God is the end of every oppressive religion of man and of every policy that demands justification for its domination. In fact, the cross is "theo-logy" in a strong sense. It is not man's word about God, but God's Word about Himself, crisis of all our talk about Him.
