S. FAUSTI - John does not report the trial before the Sanhedrin, because he presents Jesus' whole life as a process. Likewise, he does not recount the Transfiguration, because he reads everything in the light of the Transfiguration. His Gospel is, from beginning to end, a process: the process of the man who accepts or rejects the Word "Father". In the judgment that we make about Jesus, the Son, is given the judgment that we make about ourselves. The killing that we decree and execute of Him reveals the violence that is in our hearts, which decrees and executes our condemnation, killing us in our truth as sons and brothers. But His killing saves us. For He is the Shepherd, as a Lamb who takes away the evil of the world.(1,29). "Being a man, you made yourself God." Isn't this supreme impiety? Man Jesus is God; indeed, more precisely, God is man Jesus! His humanity reveals to us a God totally different from that which religions profess and which the atheists deny. What for every religion sounds like "blasphemy" is the essence of Christianity and is the salvation of man. All the works of Jesus, especially that of laying down His life for the benefit of His brothers and sisters, reveal Him as the Son who loves with the same Love of the Father. In the name of the God that we imagine, we take life away from the One who gives life! It is Jesus' provocation to recognize Him as the Son of God (v. 32-39). He opens messianic expectation to an unprecedented perspective: the Messiah is the Son of God Himself, the Salvation that He brings is the gift of His life. Now He reveals that He is the Savior Messiah as the only begotten Son of God. One can only believe His Word because it corresponds to works. "They tried to capture Him again" ( 7,30. 8,20 ). The words of Jesus provoke a reaction in those who hear them: either they believe in Him (v.41-42) and they have the same life as sons, or kills the Son and their own reality as sons. But - the cunning of God and our salvation - His killing becomes the supreme gift that the Son makes of Himself, the witness of unconditional Love for our brothers and sisters. Darkness cannot stifle light(1,5): by grasping it, they are overcome by it. It is an anticipation of the Paschal exodus. "Jesus returns to the place where He appeared at the beginning, we do not know where, when the Spirit came upon Him and was manifested as the Son of God.(1,29-34). Jesus becomes the meeting place of those who welcome the Light. John did not make any sign, but He Himself is the sign par excellence: He is the "voice" of the Word (1:23), the truth of which is shown in the works of Jesus. What He said about Himself, is now clear. Jesus is indeed the Son of God (1:34). Jesus, with what He does for us, fulfills every promise of God. To adhere to Him is to adhere to God and find life. If at v. 20 "many reject Him", here "many believe in Him".
