JESUS LIGHT OF THE WORLD JH 8,12

  1. FAUSTI - "I am the Light of the world", proclaims Jesus in the temple,
    after crying out that He is the source of life, which quenches the thirst of all who believe in Him (7:37).
    Jesus revealed Himself in the symbol of marriage and wine, of temple and wind, of water and bread; now He proclaims Himself Light.
    He is the source of wine (2,1-10), wind (3,8), water and bread (3,34), because He Himself, Son of God and Son of Man, has Life in Himself (1,4-5,26) and is the Light of Man (1,4s 9). Everything that exists is speaking of Him, and He is the Light of mankind (1:4, 9),
    because everything is done through Him and in Him it has its consistency.
    Light is not only the principle of creation, which brings the cosmos out of nothing:
    as it makes exist, so it shows, knows and rejoices in everything.
    To see the light means to come out of the darkness and to enter into the light:
    By seeing Jesus, the Son, we are born to our reality as children of God.
    In Chapter 3 we speak of a birth "from on high". is the enlightenment of those who contemplate the love of the Father in the Son, given for the life of the world. In Him we come to light as children, people who know the love from which they come and live.
    "Jesus, light of the world" is like the title of chapter 8.
    The form is not that of a serene dialogue, as when two seek the truth, it is rather a struggle between the truth that is proposed as light and the lie that opposes itself as darkness: it is the encounter-clash between the offering and the refusal of life.
    Chapter 8 presents a hand-to-hand encounter between the Son, who is Truth, Light and Life, and his brothers still closed in lies, slaves in the darkness of death. It is a theological account of what happened between Jesus and his contemporaries, offered to the Church of John so that she doesn't get discouraged if She has to face the same misunderstandings and oppositions. More deeply, we can say that the text, as usual, reproduces what happens in those who listen to the Word: in the interlocutor the resistance of the darkness that is ripped, so that he himself can become light.

  2. S. KAROL WOJTYLA - THINKING HOMELAND -
    When I think "homeland" I express myself,
    I sink my roots,
    it is the voice of the heart, a secret frontier that branches out from me
    towards others,
    to embrace everyone, up to the most ancient past of each.
    from this I emerge... when I think "homeland"
    almost hiding a treasure within me.
    I ask myself how to increase it, how to expand the space
    it fills.

  3. Have mercy on me, O God, for a man persecutes me,
    an assailant oppresses me all day long. (Ps 55:2)

    O Father, who with the gift of your love
    fills us with every blessing, transform us into new creatures,
    to be prepared for the glorious Easter of your kingdom.
    Through our Lord Jesus Christ

    From the book of the prophet Daniel
    Dn 13:41c–62

    In those days, the crowd condemned Susanna to death.
    Then Susanna cried out in a loud voice, “Eternal God, you know the secrets, you know all things before they come to pass, you know that they have borne false witness against me! I die innocent of all that they have wickedly plotted against me.” And the Lord heard her voice.
    While Susanna was being led to her death, the Lord stirred up the holy spirit of a young man named Daniel, who began to cry out, “I am innocent of this woman’s blood!” They all turned to him and said, “What do you mean by these words?” Then Daniel stood among them and said, “Are you so foolish, O sons of Israel? You have condemned a daughter of Israel to death without investigating or finding out the truth? Return to the judgment seat, for these men have borne false witness against her.” Then
    the people quickly returned, and the elders said to Daniel, “Come, sit among us and instruct us, since God has given you the privileges of eldership.” Daniel said, “Separate them well, one from another, that I may judge them.”
    When they were separated, Daniel said to the first, “You who have grown old in wickedness, behold, your sins which you committed in the past have come to light, when you passed unjust sentences, oppressing the innocent and acquitting the wicked, although the Lord has said, ‘You shall not put the righteous and innocent to death.’ Now then, if you have seen her, tell me: Under what tree did you see them together?” He answered, “Under a mastic tree.” Daniel said, “Surely your lie will fall on your own head; the angel of God has received the sentence from God and will tear you in two.”
    He put him aside and called the other and said to him, “Offspring of Canaan and not of Judah, beauty has seduced you, lust has perverted your heart! Thus you dealt with the daughters of Israel, and they lay with you out of fear. But a daughter of Judah could not bear your iniquity. Tell me, then, under what tree did you find them together?” He answered, “Under a holm oak.” Daniel said, “Surely your lie will fall on your own head; behold, the angel of God is waiting for you with a sword in his hand to cut you in two, and kill you.”
    Then the whole assembly shouted for joy and blessed God, who saves those who hope in him. Then they rose up against the two elders, whom Daniel had made confess with their own mouths that they had given false testimony. They inflicted on them the same punishment they had plotted against their neighbors, and, according to the law of Moses, put them to death. On that day innocent blood was saved.

    The Word of the Lord.

    From Psalm 22 (23)
    R. With you, O Lord, I will fear no evil.
    The Lord is my shepherd;
    I shall not want.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures;
    he leads me beside still waters.
    He restores my soul. R.

    He leads me in right paths
    for his name's sake.
    Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
    I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me. R.

    You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies.
    You anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows. R.

    Yes, goodness and truth will follow me
    all the days of my life;
    I will dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever. R.

  4. Acclamation to the Gospel
    Praise and honor to you, Lord Jesus!

    I am the light of the world, says the Lord;
    whoever follows me will have the light of life. (Jn 8:12)

    Praise and honor to you, Lord Jesus!

    Gospel
    I am the light of the world.
    From the Gospel according to John
    Jn 8:12-20

    At that time, Jesus spoke to the Pharisees and said: "I am the light of the world; whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
    The Pharisees then said to him, "You bear witness on your own behalf; your testimony is not true." Jesus answered them, "Even if I bear witness on my own behalf, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. And even if I judge, my judgment is true, for I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me. And in your law it is written that the testimony of two is true. I am the one who bears witness to myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness to me. '
    Then they said to him, 'Where is your Father? ' Jesus answered, 'You neither know me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also. '
    Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, while he was teaching in the temple. And no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

    1. WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER
      Let us think of our vices, let us think of our pride, let us think of our worldly spirit: these things blind us, they distance us from the light of Jesus. But if we begin to think these things, we will not find a wall, no, we will find a way out, because Jesus himself says that he is the light, and also: "I came into the world not to condemn the world, but to save the world" (see John 12:46-47). Jesus himself, the light, says: “Have courage: let yourself be enlightened, let yourself be seen for what you have inside, because it is I who carry you forward, who save you. I do not condemn you. I save you” (Homily from Santa Marta, 6 May 2020)
