John places as the source of this journey the contemplation of the Pierced One. The Son of man torn by the spear is the opening of heaven over every son of man. Through the crack of His side comes out the water that quenches our thirst and we enter into the mystery of God. We seek signs and wonders. The Gospel instead presents us with the prodigy of a God who loves in this way. The blow of the lance does not serve to ascertain the death of Jesus, already ascertained on sight. Instead, it produces the wound from which we scrutinize the abyss of Love from which we come, the blood from which we are born and the water from which we live. This scene develops the previous one, where Jesus gives us the Spirit, and forms a diptych with the following one, where His Body, as a grain of wheat placed under the ground, produces much fruit (12,24). . It will be a single day. The Lord knows it; there will be neither day nor night; towards evening the light will shine. On that day, living waters will flow out of Jerusalem and descend part towards the East Sea and part towards the Mediterranean Sea, always, summer and winter. The Lord will be King of all the earth and there will be only the Lord, and only His Name" (Zc 14,6-9). The Body of Jesus, Son of Man and Son of God, is the true Sanctuary (2:21). His pierced side is the side of the Temple from which flows the great river that heals and revives earth and sea, producing trees that bear fruit twelve months of the year. Their fruits are food to every hunger, their leaves medicine to every evil (Ez 47:1-12 Rev 22:2). The opening of the side of the Crucifix corresponds to the tearing of the veil of the sanctuary mentioned in the other Gospels: abolishing all separation, it establishes communion between God and man. The soldier's spear opens the door of the great passage, from which God comes out to man and man enters into God. The definitive Easter and the New Covenant, the new creation and the outpouring of the Spirit, begin. What is accomplished in Jesus inaugurates our future. From the Son comes living water for our brothers and sisters. "From that hour" they will continue in the world His same mission, on the way to "the hour", which must be fulfilled in all, as in Him and thanks to Him. "(Zechariah 12:10) Zechariah speaks of the contemplation of a pierced man from whom a spirit of grace and consolation will be poured out on all. This is what happens "on that day". where a gushing spring will purify the people (Zc 13:1) and living, eternal waters will flow from Jerusalem. Then the Lord will be king of all the earth (Zc 14,8). The salvation of the pierced king is universal, like His Kingship: "And everyone will see him, even those who pierce him, and all the nations of the earth will fight for Him their bosoms" (Rev 1,7). The aim of the Gospel of John is to bring us before the pierced king, to peer through the crack of the lance. The eye and the heart of the reader is all towards this wound from which Blood and Water gushes. He who looks at it becomes radiant (Ps 34:6). He who contemplates the Pierced One, understands extreme love, feels his heart compunctious and asks . "What is to be done?" (Acts 2:37). his life now becomes a response to what he has seen. From Jacob's well our fathers and their herds drank (4,12) : from this cleft of the Rock the whole universe draws the life of the Son. It is enough to place the mouth next to it: "O all you thirsty ones, come to the water" (Is 55:1). It is the invitation of wisdom, of the Word made flesh, which does not return without having accomplished what it was sent for (Is 55:11).
